Making Adoptions a Priority

Even though the Helen Woodward Animal Center has many outstanding programs that involve the community, the key priority is to adopt out the Center’s animals into loving and permanent homes for life.

Every year, thousands of animals are put to sleep, or euthanized, either because homes cannot be found for placement, the vast majority of other shelters are overcrowded, or because the animals are too sick for their lives to be prolonged.

Helen Woodward is one of a few centers nationwide that holds unwaveringly to its “no-kill” policy. The HWAC staff notes, however, that pets from some other shelters are not safe or protected from the practice of euthanasia. In fact, in many other shelters, euthanasia is standard practice at a certain point in the stay of the animal to relieve overcrowding.

To ensure safety for all animals, Helen Woodward is happy to assist with additional adoptions by welcoming animals from surrounding overcrowded shelters.

An HWAC inventory manager assesses and monitors the amount of adoptable animals at the Center at any given time, to maximize their ability to connect pets with loving homes.
